Every word is rated ★1–5 based on how often it appears in novels, anime, drama, and visual novels (JPDB corpus, 280K+ entries). Within each JLPT level, the top 20% most-used words get ★★★★★. Study 5-star words first and you'll cover the most ground in the least time.
If you already have a foundation, you can bulk-mark familiar words as known on the list page to skip them as a starting point. But that's just the start — marked words move onto the long-term review schedule, and real mastery is still verified and calibrated by the FSRS spaced-repetition algorithm from your actual recall.
